Calgary University Canada, W.H.O (Geneva) Collaborator on AIDS series – 5, Visiting professor( Faculty of HIV Medicine IIMS affiliated to Arizona University USA, is a Gunnies World Record holder in HIV prevention research work for achieving the largest awareness Red Ribbon. His research contribution in the field of medicine and medical service to the people at large were adjudged by Government of India as a distinction in medical and health services and Her Excellency the President of India awarded Padma Sri, the second highest civilian award in India to Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao in 2008.

Dr. Kutikuppala has spent most of his medical career in clinical research associated with HIV and AIDS disease. Among his achievements the large epidemiological study on the Sexual Behaviour of long distance lorry drives in India which is a path breaking research that facilitated globally for a concrete strategy on prevention of HIV among truck drivers. He was the Resource Person on HIV / AIDS for academic training of NSS programme officers of Andhra University, Nagarjuna University, Kakatiya University, Osmania University,Venkateswara University and University of Health Sciences (1990-2005).


Dr. Rao guided two PGs of the University of Calgary Canada and one PG of the Federal University of Santa Catarine, Florianopolis, Brazil during March 2000-2001 and 2005-06 respectively. He is a distinguished researcher in the International Medical Circles for the last two decades. He addressed numerous National and International Conferences on the invitation of various International Universities and Institutions and chaired several International conferences on AIDS. He published a number of research papers in the World renowned medical journals like British Medical Journal (BMJ), Applied Medicine, Antiseptic, Indian Practitioner, JIMA etc., and 390 articles in popular journals of National and International repute. His current studies are towards discovery of indigenous Microbicide Gel to empower women in HIV prevention and newer approaches in AIDS treatment besides formulating accessible ART in resource poor settings.

Dr.Rao had rich experience in Research field as he served as Member Editorial Board Journal of AP Academy of Medical Sciences, MEMBER Executive Council Andhra University, MEMBER National AIDS Committee under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India, National Advisory Committee Member, (HSCI) Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, MEMBER GOVERNING COUNCIL, Andhra Pradesh Vidya Vidhana Parishad and CHAIRMAN Child welfare committee W &CW Dept., Government of Andhra Pradesh. Currently he is international Member Editorial Board, Journal of AIDS and HIV Research of Nairobi and International Reviewer of Journal of Health Lahore, Pakistan, Abstract Mentor International AIDS society Geneva .It is a rare honour to receive a commendation letter from none other than the Head of WHO patient Safety Geneva, Switzerland.

BIT’s World AIDS Day international conference was held successfully Dec. 1-3, 2011. It was an unprecedented historical event in China which provided a cross-cultural, open and free forum for the exchange of ideas and research in the area of HIV/AIDS .It is an extraordinary honor to an Indian physician to be invited as Keynote Speaker by an International forum .Dr.Surya Rao is one of the keynote speakers out of four selected globally.. Dr. Kalevi Reijonen, President and CEO, FIT Biotech Ltd., Finland, Dr. Shibo Jiang, Professor, Fudan University,Beijing China and Dr. Carol A. Poore, President and CEO, Southwest Center for HIV / AIDS, Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

The W.H.O ( World Health Organization ) HQ Geneva Professor Didier Pittet Director, Infection Control Programme, University of Geneva Hospitals and Faculty of Medicine External Programme Lead, WHO First Global Patient Safety Challenge: Clean Care is Safer Care and Dr.Edward Kelley, Head Strategic Programmes and Coordinator WHO patient Safety jointly presented a letter of Commendation to Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao in November 2011 for his outstanding contribution in reducing the Health care-associated infections (HCAI) in India in this region.

Awards (National/International)

Dr. Kutikuppala won many National and International prestigious Awards. To mention a few he received Gold Medals thrice from the Hon’ble Governors of Andhra Pradesh for his meritorious services in Medical and Primary Health Care particularly rendering services to Girijan Youth in 1988, 1989 and 1990. The Nobel Laureate Mother Theresa appreciated the services of Dr. Rao in 1989. He received Dr. Ranganadhan Memorial National Award for presentation of Best Research paper on AIDS at NRS Medical College, Calcutta in 1993, Vijaya Gujaral National Award from  Sri. I.K. Gujaral from the then Prime Minister of India for his outstanding contribution for the welfare of children of sex workers in the red light areas and slums of Visakhapatnam in 1997 and prestigious National Award from Sri K.R. Narayanan the then president of India for his services to children through Child Foundation of India in the year 2002. He also received Raja Kandaswamy Mudaliar Gold Medal instituted by St. John Ambulance Association from H.E Shri Surjit Singh Barnal, Governor of Andhra Pradesh for his yeoman services in 2003 and Decennial Service Award in the Area of HIV / AIDS from Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2006.    

Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, Hon’ble Minister of Health and family welfare, Govt of India felicitated 9 experts in HIV medicine from the world on behalf of HIV Congress 2008 at Mumbai on 22nd March 2008.  Dr Surya Rao was one of them.Dr.Rao had the honour of being invited by the Director, UNAIDS to participate from India in the ( UNO )“UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY HIGH LEVEL MEETING ” which was held on 10th & 11th June, 2008 in New York. This meeting has been a very prestigious one and declared by US Govt as “designated event” which was attended by global leaders like Mr. Bill Clinton with whom Dr. Suryarao interacted. During Oct 3-5th, ’08 Dr Rao received prestigious Silver  jubilee Oration of the Institute of Venereology of Madras University at Kodaikanal, Chennai.

In early 90s when the society has mercilessly prejudiced HIV patients and no specified facilities in Government institutions, Dr. Rao boldly started a hospital for HIV/AIDS patients, which is India’s first comprehensive HIV/AIDS care center in private sector at a semi urban settlement Kancharapalem.

He studied the reproductive health, AIDS and STD profile of 300 eligible couple of slums of Visakhapatnam while extending health services in red light inhabitations namely Bhupeshnagar, Kobbarithota, Netaji Nagar and Laxmidevi Peta during 2004-05 where he directly observed, the living conditions of the people in slums and red light areas and initiated action oriented plans for the betterment of these section. The projects which Dr.Rao launched have operations in around 300 villages and tribal   hamlets in the Districts of Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao has been selected for the award of Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) (London). FRCP is given in recognition of particular professional merit.
E qually the granting of fellowship is very highly regarded, partivularly in the less well developed parts of the world where we hope that our influence can help to maintain and improve standards in medical care and in medical care systems stated by Mr. Heather Drane, Fellowship administrator, Royal college of Physicians) London in a letter to Dr. Surya Rao.

His research contribution in the field of medicine and medical service to the people at large were adjudged by Government of India as a distinction in medical and health services and the President of India awarded Padma Sri, the prestigious civilian award in India to Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao in 2008. It is incredible that Dr. Surya Rao is the only medical specialist in Coastal Andhra who got Padmasri and FRCP (London) during last half a century, informed Dr. Surya Rao in a press release.

Lions Club of Visakhapatnam South has given away its first Lions Lifetime Achievement award to Padmasri Kutikuppala Surya Rao for his outstanding achievements in the field of medicine-HIV/AIDS research, at a function held here on Friday.

Dr. Surya Rao, a senior member of the club, has been participating in the service activities of the club such as diabetes prevention, HIV/AIDS projects, child welfare projects, and general medical camps for the last two-and-half decades. He was recently awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP, London).

Lions district governor P.T. Kumarparticipated as chief guest and the first vice-governor Lion V.S.V.D. Siva Prasad was the guest of honour.

Dr. Surya Rao thanked the club for granting the prestigious lifetime achievement award to him.

Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao is a renowned physician who has been synonymous with service in the field of Medicine for championing the cause of AIDS. The Govt of India has announced PADMASHRI to Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao during 2008 Republic Day Celebrations for his
outstanding contribution to society. HIV Congress 2008 takes this opportunity to felicitate Padmashri Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao.

2. He has graduate in Medicine from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam and did Post Graduation in Family Medicine from Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) Colombo and MNAMS from National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He did fellowship (FHM) in
HIV medicine from the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. He passed MA (Phil) in Indian Philosophy from Andhra University and currently pursuing Ph.D in Andhra University.
3. He has been the Resource Person for the orientation training prgorammes for NSS programme officers of Andhra University, Nagarjuna University, Kakatiya University, Osmania University, Venkateswara University and University of Health Sciences on HIV / AIDS (1990- 2005). Dr. Rao guided two PGs of the University of Calgary Canada and one PG of the Federal University of Santa Catarine, Florianopolis, Brazil during March 2000-2001 and 2005-06 respectively. He
collaborated the Telugu Publication of World Health Organization (WHO) AIDS series -5 from 1992 to 1993, the first of its kind in the world for which WHO awarded a grant of 1000 U.S $ to Dr. Rao. He was Member – Executive Council of Andhra University (1995). He was formerly Member of National AIDS committee, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India (1997-2000). He also served as Chairman (Vizag chapter) IMA Academy of Medical Specialties and academic Director – IMA.

4. He chaired the 3rd International conference on AIDS at Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1997 and in July 2000 he chaired a Scientific session of XIII International AIDS Conference at Durban on treatment and care of HIV +Ve Orphans.

5. He published 57 research papers in the World renowned medical journals like British Medical Journal (BMJ), Applied Medicine, Antiseptic, Indian Practitioner, JIMA etc., and 390 articles in
popular journals of National and International repute.

Setting record: Guinness World Records adjudicator Damain Field presenting a recognition memento to Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao for creating world’s largest HIV/AIDS awareness ribbon near RK Beach in Visakhapatnam

A city-based physician set a world record by making and displaying the largest-ever awareness red ribbon here on Tuesday.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Damain Field declared the ribbon displayed near RK Beach in front of a galaxy of VIPs as a new record by Kutikuppala Surya Rao. Dr. Rao, a Padma Shri recipient, broke the earlier record of the world’s largest awareness ribbon made in Dublin in South Africa on World AIDS Day in 2008.

The ribbon made by Dr. Surya Rao Kutikuppala as per the specifications of the Guinness World Records is 110 metres long, base to top admeasuring 49 metres and width of 220 cm. It took two weeks to make the giant ribbon.

Dr. Surya Rao kutikuppala expressed satisfaction over the new record and dedicated the feat to Vizagites. “I am grateful to the people of Visakhapatnam for extending their support to my efforts to create awareness on HIV/AIDS,” he said. Speaking at a meeting to celebrate the new record, District Collector J. Syamal Rao complimented Dr. Rao and said the initiative would further help in expressing solidarity with the people living with HIV/AIDS and redoubling efforts to sensitise people on having safe sex. Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao said society should not discriminate against people living with HIV/AIDS and called for moral support to the victims to live with dignity. With regular drugs and diet supplement, the patients could lead a normal life, he added. E.A.S. Sarma, former IAS officer, said a massive awareness campaign was required to prevent people with high-risk behaviour from acquiring the dreaded virus. He said more efforts were required to contain the spread of the virus. S.V. Adinarayana Rao, Director-General of Prema Hospital, called upon the people to take a pledge to make Visakhapatnam AIDS-free.

GITAM University Vice-Chancellor G. Subrahmanyam, Dr. Revari and Geetanjali from National AIDS Control Organisation, Dr. Manisha from the Navy and others were present.
